ABOUT MAXIMO LAURA

Maestro Maximo Laura is an internationally renowed textile artist known for his tapestry techniques and use of color.

He combines ancient traditions from the Andes with contemporary tapestry weaving, as well as his own textured techniques, to create tapestries that are vibrant in color and in textures.

 

He has been designated as one of Peru’s “Living Human Treasures”. This important award is given, following UNESCO guidelines, to an artist whose role is to preserve and elevate the culture of their homeland.

Throughout his 35+ years as a tapestry weaver, he has exhibited his work in more than 29 countries, winning many awards in an international and national level.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

This workshop is designed to adapt to the experience of each participant, as you will have the personal hand of Maximo Laura assisting the group during the workshop, along with three Master Weavers, Jim Laura, Richar Laura and Paola Laura.

It is open for beginners, intermediate and advanced weavers. Although it is not a requirement, we recommend participants to have basic previous experience on a loom, to be able to take more advantage of this workshop.

Maestro Laura and the Master Weavers will be with you throughout all of the workshop.

On the last day of the workshop, we will organize a special exhibition with all the completed pieces, sharing the last day with Maestro Laura and receiving your certificate for completion of the workshop. You will be able to take your piece with you at no additional cost!

During this workshop you will learn:

  • Design: The process used by Maestro Laura to design his works, as well the considerations and challenges while designing and making cartoons in tapestry
  • Technology: The technology involved in the design part of the process
  • Color: How to prepare the colors and the technique to obtain optical effects and blend colors in materials
  • Texture: How to use different techniques simultaneously on the weave

During this workshop you will learn 8 fundamental techniques, that with its variations, add up to 12 different techniques:

LEARN TO CREATE WITH FIBERS AND COLORS

WHERE

The workshop will take place in Lima – Peru.

Specifically, it will take place at the Girasoles Hotel, in the beautiful Miraflores district in Lima – Peru.

Known as one of Lima’s most modern districts, Miraflores is characterized by a vivid cultural scene with many theaters, cinemas, cultural centers, restaurants and cafes. It’s also next to Barranco, Lima’s bohemian district, known for its traditional streets, art galleries and cafes.

Maximo Laura’s home/studio is also located in Lima, so to make this workshop even more special, we will have an entire morning to explore the studio guided by Maximo himself.  

 

HOTEL & SURROUNDINGS

The workshop will take place in the conference room of the hotel Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay in the Sacred Valley of Cusco. 

WORKSHOP ITINERARY

Day 1 (July 8, 2025): Arriving to Lima

We will pick you up from the Lima airport and take you to your accommodation

Day 2 (July 9, 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 3 (July 10, 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 4 (July 11, 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 5 (July 12, 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 6 (July 13, 2025): City Tour of Cusco

By this day we’ll all be acclimated to Cusco’s altitude, so we’ll be ready for a tour of Cusco city!

We’ll visit Maximo’s gallery/museum where he’ll show us his private collection of tapestries, to then go out and explore San Blas, Cusco’s artistic neighborhood.

Day 7 (July 14 – 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 8 July 15 – 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Day 9 (July 16 – 2025): Full Day of Workshop (lunch included)

Finishing and cleaning process of your piece. Exibition of final works at the end of the day.

Day 10 (July 17 – 2025): Departure.

We will take you from your accommodation in Lima to the airport for your departure.

EXTENSION TOUR:

If you’re interested in joining an extension tour to Cusco after the workshop, please let us know, we need at least 8 students interested to make it happen!

PRICE

We have created 3 different plans, designed to be flexible to the desires of each participant, please find the details of each plan below.

The payments can be made online, with a debit or credit card, through a payment link that we provide, or it can be made through a bank wire transfer.

The payments are divided in three parts:

– An initial deposit of US$ 600 to reserve your spot, an interim payment and a final payment. 

TAPESTRY WORKSHOP

Plan #1: US$ 1,800
(Tapestry Workshop)

This plan is design for those who would like to choose where to stay. There are people that have been to Cusco before and have their favorite spots, or others who would like to choose their hotel, so in this plan, each participant can coordinate their accommodation and walk to the workshop space in the morning.

The workshop will take place in the town of Yucay, in the Sacred Valley of Urubamba. Yucay is 5 minutes away from the city of Urubamba, which has a wide variety of hotels, from hostels to 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. If you wish to stay in the city of Urubamba, we will provide a private van that can pick up all students staying in Urubamba during the morning and return again in the afternoon. This daily transfer from Urubamba – Yucay – Urubamba has no additional cost.

To maximize learning and weaving time, the workshop also includes 7 lunches at the restaurant inside the Sonesta Posada del Inca Hotel

This plan includes the workshop and your accommodation for 9 nights at the Sonesta Posada del Inca Hotel in Yucay (shared accommodation). Your accommodation also includes 9 buffett breakfasts.  

This is a great option for those who would like to stay at the same hotel where the workshop will take place.

This plan includes a total of 14 days and 13 nights. 

After the tapestry weaving workshop, you will go on a 4 day adventure to visit Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, the archeological sites of Pisaq, Moray and Ollantaytamb, an ancient Inca town. It also includes a day of hands-on natural dyes workshop with the ladies of the town of Chincheros, at the outskirts of Cusco!
