Today, more than ever, each donation makes a huge difference.

Kids at the Crossroads Peru, a small nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, USA, which serves over 1,800 low-income children in the Ayacucho town (Maximo’s hometown).

You can see all the great work they’re doing through their Facebook Page HERE.

Kids at the Crossroads Peru has been helping children that live both in extremely isolated rural villages and in the city of Ayacucho. Their three programs include providing annual Christmas Cheer, providing school supplies and monthly food support to Rural Schools, in addition to daily education and food support to 110 children through our After School Program in the city of Ayacucho. Due to the pandemic, it became imperative to shift their mission from education to full-on food support.

Peru has been locked down under a state of emergency for several months due to the Covid pandemic, which has devastated the families within the program. These people live on the daily wages they earn, they have no savings accounts or social safety nets.

The parents had great difficulty finding work to feed their families. In May, the director and teachers of the program began to purchase healthy, balanced weekly meals for our families to pick up at the school. Education had to take a secondary role; no child can learn on an empty tummy!

They plan to continue this food support as long as the need exists. And unfortunately, it appears the pandemic will persist well into 2022.

The good news is that they have been able to keep all teachers employed throughout the pandemic. Though all of the public schools in Peru have been closed, their teachers have been sending home weekly work sheets to the students with their weekly food bags, along with notes of encouragements. Just recently they have opened our school back up, on a very limited basis.

With their parents’ permission, most of the 5 th and 6 th grade students have returned to school for a few days a week for 1.5 hours at a time. They sit 2-3 to a very long table, with their teacher socially distanced, everyone of course wearing a mask. The children are slowly regaining some of the reading and math skills they had lost during this long educational gap and they hope to open the school back up to other grades soon.

This has been an unexpectedly expensive year for Kids at the Crossroads Peru so we hope that through this raffle and with your support, we can add a bit of support to this wonderful organization.

In the last few years Maximo has been experimenting with different forms and shapes and a result from this exploration has been 3-D textiles sculptures. One of the pieces that resulted from this experimentation will be given away through this raffle.

The winner will receive the textile sculpture that we see above. With a size of 38 x 28 inches (98 x 73 cm), it’s valued at US$ 650 – US$ 750. The piece will be shipped to any city worldwide through DHL Express.
