Maximo’s work represents a masterful continuity in Peru’s textile traditions. His work is a woven symbiosis of ancient Andean textiles, international influences, and something deeply personal. It’s art.

Maximo Laura’s intention is to express his view of the universe and to pass on his ancestors’ “energy” — not through repetition, but through adaptation to contemporary experience.

Most of the best works here (Game Changers: Fiber Art Masters and Innovators Exhibiton) are straight-ahead textiles. Peruvian artist Maximo Laura’s hand-woven tapestry “Warrior of Light in the Blue Night,” majestic in warm jewel tones, depicts an almost monstrous warrior, his giant head studded with game-board patterns and shifting tones. Tufted textures rise off the surface of the piece, imbuing it with three-dimensionality.
