Sea Life Tapestries by Maximo Laura

Private Collection

During his 30 year career as a textile artist,  Peruvian tapestry weaver Maximo Laura has dedicated and explored a variety of themes, from Peruvian traditional tapestries to abstract contemporary designs. One theme that has always felt close to him and came back over time is the sea life. There is a long tradition in Peruvian textiles for sea themes, going back to the pre-Columbian cultures. Maximo Laura has continued this tradition, giving it a contemporary twist and expanding the color palete and techniques. In Laura’s sea tapestries we can see marine creatures from the pacific ocean, specially from the coast of Peru and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

The selection of tapestries on this page is only a fraction of the tapestries inside Laura’s personal collection. They are a close encounter with the details, textures and techniques that characterizes  Laura’s work. This page includes the tapestry “Festival of the Water Goddess”, awarded at the 5th International Fiber Art Biennale in Beijing, China.

I am stunned and amazed by your work, You are truly inspiring! I am trying to understand how you accomplished the intricate design. Was this done on a loom? Thank you so much for posting this beautiful piece.
